Lucie Hamilton Olmstead raised nine children in rural Michigan in the 30's and 40's. My grandfather was a sharecropper, and the family moved every couple of years within the same community in southwestern Michigan. The family was very poor.
When she died in 1955 of heart failure Lucie left few material possessions. Her daughters carried on the tradition of preserving food, but her recipes remained hidden away for many decades.
Aunt Helen gave me a copy of her recipes a couple of years ago. The collection is fascinating to me, and the difference in how food was prepared, how ingredients have changed, and what a cook "just knew".
This blog was created as a way to explore Lucie's world and to share her recipes with her descendants.
love this!
ReplyDeleteMy first comment! Thanks for the love!
ReplyDeleteBecky, I love the dynamic design of the blog, and just in general, this is wonderful, wonderful thing to share with your family -- and other readers!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of unearthing historic family recipes. The thing I so enjoy about recipe blogs are getting a snapshot of the family history involving them, historical background, how your cooking process went, and how the dishes were received when served. Photos are a must, also, whether gathering, preparing, cooking, or enjoying. You have a great start with this, and I would say, "More! More!"
